Senator Mikulski understands the sacrifices that our service men and women and their families continue to make to protect our country. She has made a point to guarantee the nation's fighting force is given the care and treatment that each individual servicemen and women needs. As a member of the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, Senator Mikulski is committed to supporting our troops and their families - on the battlefield and at home.

Advocating for Stronger Equipment - Senator Mikulski continues to fight for federal support of our troops abroad by advocating for additional funds for advanced body armor, armored Humvees, and Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles (MRAPs). While continuing to fight for the troops she calls for a clear timetable of troop rotation and visits home to lessen the strains that occur while overseas.

Military Education Benefits - Senator Mikulski is a defender for the financial security of our troops by advocating for increases in military allowances. She continues to promote increases in Montgomery G.I. Bill educational benefits that help to alleviate the financial burdens of our troops associated with attaining a higher education. Senator Mikulski diligently advocates for the full refund of tuition and fees to students unable to complete their studies because of their active duty service.

Affordable Health Care - Senator Mikulski strives to make sure veterans have access to affordable health care to those that have given their lives in protection of our country. She has proposed the largest funding increase ever for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and continues to fight for the resources the VA needs to successfully rehabilitate our veterans. Senator Mikulski has worked to prevent veterans from having to pay increased fees for health care and increased co-pays for prescription drugs. She has advocated for individualized care plans to help service members receive appropriate Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) services.

Safety First- Senator Mikulski fights to strengthen and equip the National Guard and Reserve in supporting legislation that empowers the Guard by promoting the National Guard Bureau Chief to a 4-star General, creating a separate budget for domestic Guard missions, and improving response to national disasters by identifying gaps in federal and state capabilities (National Guard Empowerment Acts. Senator Mikulski is adamant in providing additional funding to address equipment shortfalls that remain a common problem.
