HOW HEALTH CARE REFORM HELPS WOMEN

  • Guarantee women access to preventative care amd screenings with no copays or deductibles- including mammograms.
  • End gender rating so women are not charged more than men: Women are not charged up to 60% more than men for same insurance- simply for being a woman.
  • End discrimination based on pre-existing conditions: In 8 states, domestic violence was considered a pre-existing condition.

WORKING TO FIND CURES AND BREAKTHROUGHS

  • Doubled funding for NIH.
  • Worked to increase breast cancer research by 700% since 1990.
  • Created Office of Women’s Health at NIH and FDA
  • Introduced Alzheimer’s Breakthrough Act to double funding for research and treatment.

IMPROVING HEALTH CARE QUALITY AND ACCESS

  • Wrote original law that ensures low-income women can get breast and cervical cancer screening.
  • Introduced Mammography Quality Standards Act- to ensure that doctors and facilities provide reliable mammograms.
  • Introduced Uterine Fibroid Research and Education Act- to double funding for research and treatment of fibroids, which particularly affect African American women.

STRENGHTENING MARYLAND’S HEALTH CARE SERVICES AND FACILITIES

  • Secured funding for Maryland’s great helath institution- including University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins, Kennedy Kreiger, Prince Georges Hospital, Holy Cross Hospital. Sinai Hospital and Mercy Hospital.

STRENGHTENING HEALTH CARE WORKFORCE

  • Introduced Nurse Reinvestment Act to expand and provide training for nurse education and training.
  • Support for nursing programs at Maryland’s Community Colleges.
  • Increase student aid for medical students going into primary care medicine.
